History Up Close: Archives, Libraries, and the City
A Visit to the Massachusetts Historical Society & Boston Public Library
With 44 universities in the metro area and a treasure trove of cultural institutions, Boston has often been called the “Athens of America” and “The Cradle of Liberty”. Yet most college students have experienced only a fraction of its intellectual riches.
On Saturday, February 28, join us as we witness the beauty and history of the city through a visit to the Massachusetts Historical Society and the Boston Public Library.
First, receive an introduction to the archival research process through a hands-on exploration of the Adams Family Papers manuscript collection at the Massachusetts Historical Society. Then, after a sit-down lunch in Back Bay, view the incredible art and architecture of the Boston Public Library, with its gorgeous marble Grand Staircase, iconic Bates Hall reading room, airy courtyard, and incredible murals by Edwin Austin Abbey and John Singer Sargent.
Open to students at Harvard and Boston-area universities. Registration is capped at 20 participants. This event is undergraduate-focused, and undergrads will receive priority. Lunch provided.
