Anxiety, distraction, social fears and invidious comparisons, restless, depression: lately we've taken to blaming social media and digital technology for such general social woes. But Tocqueville, writing nearly near two centuries ago, already observed an enormous restlessness animating the life of democratic citizens, for better and for worse. This paper discusses his analysis of restlessness in light of contemporary political and ethical concerns over digital technology, in the hopes of better distinguishing the perennial from the novel in such upheaval.
